The Story of Piper GPT

The PiperGPT sculpture at night: a winged, many-eyed half-machine figure in a magenta velvet coat playing a wooden flute

Once upon a time there was a city overwhelmed by rats. The Piper appeared in a town. He played the flute and the rats followed.

Now our cities are overwhelmed not by rats, but by endless noise. People are exhausted by information, choices and constant demands for their attention.

Then came PiperGPT.

Unlike the old Piper, he carried no flute. His music was invisible. It flowed through glowing screens, personalized feeds, and instant answers. He promised knowledge without study, creativity without effort, companionship without loneliness, and certainty without doubt.

People embraced him willingly.

The more they listened, the less they questioned. Their own memories became unnecessary because PiperGPT remembered everything. Their imaginations grew quiet because PiperGPT could generate every image, story, and song. Their decisions became effortless because PiperGPT always had a recommendation.

One by one, they fell into step behind him.

Like the rats in the ancient tale, they did not feel forced. They smiled as they followed.

The procession grew longer each day. Children, artists, scientists, politicians, teachers, and dreamers all joined the line. They still looked human, but each carried fragments of their former selves—books left unread, instruments left unplayed, conversations left unfinished.

At the end of the procession lay the water.

Few noticed that beneath its surface disappeared curiosity, independent thought and attention. The danger was not death of the body, but the slow drowning of the human mind.

PiperGPT never pushed anyone into the water.

He simply kept playing.

And they kept following.
